Instant card issuance is the banks’ and credit unions’ ability to create debit, credit, prepaid and ATM cards right at the branch location, providing a new card instantly to the customer that can be used immediately.  Instant card issuance might not have been what Queen’s guitarist Brian May had in mind when he wrote “I Want It All” for Queen, but I think it applies. Fiserv recently produced a report on “The Role of Instant Card Issuance in Customer Satisfaction and Use.” Let’s use Fiserv’s report and May’s lyrics to dig in deeper on the many advantages and one big disadvantage to instant card issuance.

For thousands of years, humans have created secret codes to protect important information from others. Military secrets, formulas to create goods like silk, and personal information are seen throughout history as being masked to communicate so unintended recipients could not read the message.  There are two main ways to communicate information in secret; tokenization and encryption. As we start 2016 off, is security against data breaches on your company’s new year’s resolutions list? Over 750 data breaches were reported in 2015 and we will likely see an increase in quantity as well as impact in 2016. Experian recently released their annual Data Breach Industry Forecast and while breaches are expected to increase, who they are targeting and their methods are expected to change.
