# UPS, Newest Retailer To Suffer Data Breach

Today, United Parcel Service Inc. (**[UPS](http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-08-20/ups-store-computer-breach-put-customer-data-at-risk.html)**) said a breach of its computer systems occurred, potentially exposing customers’ personal and payment data across the United States. A spokeswoman for UPS, Chelsea Lee, said that the company found malware at 51 locations in 24 states and that the company began investigations into its computer systems on July 31st.

This coincides with the Department of Homeland Security and the Secret Service's warning that cybercriminals have been attempting to gain remote access capabilities at various retailers across the United States. While malware was found in over 24 states, the compromised stores equal roughly 1 percent of the company's 4,470 franchise stores.

**Compromised Details**:

The compromised data includes:

- Name
- Email Address
- Mailing Address
- Card numbers
- Expiration Date
- Other credit or debit card numerical information including CVV codes

**Identity Theft Risks**

Because both personal and payment information has been reported to be compromised at the 51 UPS locations, it is strongly advised for customers who shopped at the **[affected stores](http://www.theupsstore.com/security/Pages/default.aspx)** to monitor their credit regularly. UPS customers whose payment cards may have been affected can use **[AllClear ID’](https://theupsstore.allclearid.com)**s complimentary consumer identity protection services.

UPS joins the list as one of many big companies that has been breached in past this three months, that includes **[eBay](http://www.rippleshot.com/ebay/)**, supermarket chain **[Supervalu](http://www.rippleshot.com/another-data-breach-major-supermarket-chain-supervalu/)**. A month ago, **[P.F. Chang’s China Bistro](http://www.pfchangs.com/security/)** confirmed a data breach and had to use a manual card system to process payments for a whole month.
